Last weekend we took a trip to the mountains, to our favourite little town of Canmore.
We were feeling a little adventurous and tried a different hike in the area, called Grassi Lakes. At the start we were given two routes to choose from, the 'difficult' or the 'easy'. With Rory in his backpack carrier we ventured to the 'difficult' route. The day was perfect for a hike - only a few clouds and not too warm.
The hike began with a gentle stroll through the woods, but gradually the trail became a little more challenging and started to go up and up and up and.....
After a strenuous climb up some rock carved steps we were greeted with a beautiful waterfall and a view of the reservoir. So far so good - still smiling.
The trail continued up and brought us to two spectacular lakes. So crystal clear you could see all the way to the bottom with a fantastic reflection of the surrounding mountains and trees.
Grassi Lakes - crystal clear, but freezing cold. This spot is popular with rock climbers and we enjoyed watching their a graceful, and some not so graceful, climbing expertise as they challenged gravity.
It was unfortunate that the hike up was a little too much for our little hiker...
With his cheek stuck to the carrier from his drool, Rory was out for the count and missed the beautiful lakes. Rory was asleep all the way down the trail and only woke up as we approached the car. We decided to take the easy route down - my knees were a little more forgiving on this route. Man I'm getting old!!
And what better way to end a fantastic day of hiking then a delicious dinner in our favourite pub, The Iron Goat, with fantastic views of the mountains. It was an awesome day and we look forward to our next trip to the mountains before the white stuff begins to fall!
